The ISC2 London Chapter held its final event of the year courtesy of Hiscox Insurance who hosted us at their amazing office on Bishopsgate.
As per our usual cadence, we had 3 speakers. Our first speaker was Edward Parsons, who is the relatively new Head of ISC2 Europe and provide the chapter members with a good update of the changes that ISC2 have been making, the strategy for the coming years, and of course what we all want to hear, what support is provided to its members and to the chapter.

We are seeking (ISC)2 London Chapter members to join us at the (ISC)2 stand at InfoSec Europe. InfoSec Europe is scheduled for 20-22 June 2023 at ExCel, London. There will be (ISC)2 staff on the stand throughout the event, and it would be great to have Chapter representatives at the stand for 1 or 2 hours a day (welcome to stay longer).
Following its successful launch last year, (ISC)² SECURE London will reconvene in person on 21 September 2023 to explore the latest current issues impacting cybersecurity. Professionals involved in every aspect of cyber, information, software, IT and infrastructure security will engage in a full day of new learning and partnership opportunities with their peers and industry vendors.

The theme was ‘the psychology behind a threat actor’ and couldn’t have been more timely given some of the discussions and talks taking place at the International Cyber Expo this week and from the various committees and forums that a lot of us attend. What does motivate an attack? Regardless of whether it is nation-state or nation-state affiliated or an independent organised crime unit there is motivation and there seems to be intelligence to suggest that finance is not a driving force. So what is it?
It was quickly apparent that the expectations of a CISO are vast, and the role varied between organisations. Tim Holman’s (2|Sec) presentation questioned the skills and qualifications that were truly required for a CISO role. In conclusion the CISO role was more of an advisory role across the different business units without necessarily ownership of the business function.
